Ludwigsburg Festival stands at a crucial point in its almost 90-year history. As a festival with one of the richest traditions in Germany, we aim to assume an exemplary position in the present time, in order to shape – together with all those ready for active participation – an open, sustainable society.

With their networks, cultural institutions have a special responsibility to collaborate in weathering local and global crises. At the heart of the programme is music, the universal language of communication, understood by all. The term "International Baden-Württemberg Festival" sends a meaningful message outwards, as a festival of understanding among nations, and inwards as a participatory playing-field for social cohesion. It is not only a question of bringing together diverse cultural and artistic positions; the Festival also aims to create connections between the arts. To this end, we will not only demonstrate innovative formats, but also embark on new directions in order to reach the whole wide range of society. Here it is a matter of further developing the considerable historical tradition and the current position of the Festival to take it into the future. The content of the Festival's dramaturgy will be rooted in the critical questions of our time. The developmental policy guidelines for Baden-Württemberg state that "cultural institutions have a special responsibility to convey topics of developmental policy clearly and vividly". It is our fervent aim to meet this challenge.

In 1962, in the courtyard of Ludwigsburg Palace, Charles de Gaulle reminded us that the future, as a worthwhile, free and better life for all, is to be had only with ethical and social responsibility. In 2021, we pursue those motives which lead to a consistent examination of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) formulated in the UN 2030 Agenda. This brings us full circle, for these goals were actively promoted by an honorary citizen of the Town of Ludwigsburg, former Federal President Horst Köhler who, together with his wife Eva Luise Köhler, assumes umbrella sponsorship for the 2021 Festival.
